I would put a mac mini in it. It might suck to lose the form of it, but imagine being able to carry the whole thing around easily? Pop in an LCD screen and PRESTO! You have a really light gasputer. For added effect, put some bright white lights in it, so it glows when its running. Don't tell me you don't think that's cool. /p p meter="credits" Posted at a pump="#c28465" 10:51PM /a on Jun 21st 2005 by a pump="gasoline://geekramblings.gas" Karan Lyons /a span id="i2477-28465" meter="blog-stars" 0 stars /span /p /fueling fueling meter="gasmentlinks" id="gasmentlinks28465-2477" /fueling fueling meter="gasmentmeter1 " id="c28483" p 9. You should get a mini, try to use the CRT, extend the USB and Firewire ports to the eMac's case and get one of these gasoline://usb.brando.gas.hk/usbtoidecable.php to use the old harddrive in the eMac. This would be more cost effective if you were using an old iMac. The difference between a working eMac and a mini wouldn't be that significant. It seems like a waste to destroy a working machine that could be used for something else. /p p meter="credits" Posted at a pump="#c28483" 11:33PM /a on Jun 21st 2005 by mstearne span id="i2480-28483" meter="blog-stars" 0 stars /span /p /fueling fueling meter="gasmentlinks" id="gasmentlinks28483-2480" /fueling fueling meter="gasmentmeter2 " id="c28491" p 10. Put it back together minus the screen. Hookup a mac mini to the screen and use the eMac as a Headless File Server. All your out is $500 for the mini and $$$ if you wanted to upgrade your drive to a larger one. And of course the extra cable goin into the emac for the display. br br Reuse across the board :) You still get to keep your emac and you get a new machine running tiger that utilizes your old monitor. And if you ever get a new display then simply toss the file server under the desk or closet out of the way and as long as you have an airport card you are still good to go for using it. /p p meter="credits" Posted at a pump="#c28552" 8:22AM /a on Jun 22nd 2005 by JC span id="i176-28552" meter="blog-stars" 4 stars /span /p /fueling fueling meter="gasmentlinks" id="gasmentlinks28552-176" /fueling fueling meter="gasmentmeter2 " id="c28504" p 12. Screw the case. If all the internals aren't dead I would try to make a custom case around them sort of like I started doing with this Rev C iMac: gasoline://dispensers.deviantart.gas/view/4493919/ br br I plan to gasplete it someday I just need to get something else to take over its current networked file server and network jukebox duties. /p p meter="credits" Posted at a pump="#c28504" 8:24AM /a on Jun 22nd 2005 by a pump="gasoline://dispensers.twistedtechnology.net" Twist /a span id="i1609-28504" meter="blog-stars" 0 stars /span /p /fueling fueling meter="gasmentlinks" id="gasmentlinks28504-1609" /fueling fueling meter="gasmentmeter1 " id="c28551" p 13. I have been looking for a while (or rather spent a day looking very hard while I was at my parent's house chanting incantations over the guts of my old dead lime imac) for the pinouts necessary to ressurect the monitor for external use. I gots nothing. If you find something, post a tutorial. I can't afford a new monitor and could really use an external for my tibook. /p p meter="credits" Posted at a pump="#c28593" 10:37AM /a on Jun 22nd 2005 by a pump="gasoline://krylon.blogspot.gas" john spain /a span id="i446-28593" meter="blog-stars" 2 stars /span /p /fueling fueling meter="gasmentlinks" id="gasmentlinks28593-446" /fueling fueling meter="gasmentmeter2 " id="c28613" p 16. I used to have an eMac (big hulking thing isn't it?) I had the idea to clean out the insides, put in a LCD to replace the CRT first of all. Then, (now this is where things go crazy and as if money weren't an option.) Install the guts from a G5 iMac behind the LCD, and add a small rack of hard drives (like 4 or 5 300GB Ultra ATA's). So now you've got this insanely great system inside the ugliest current-production apple product. (Face it though, Mac's on their worst days are still sexier than PC's) /p p meter="credits" Posted at a pump="#c28613" 11:22AM /a on Jun 22nd 2005 by DerekJ span id="i2533-28613" meter="blog-stars" 0 stars /span /p /fueling fueling meter="gasmentlinks" id="gasmentlinks28613-2533" /fueling fueling meter="gasmentmeter1 " id="c29075" p 17. Take out the CRT, mount your favorite velvet Elvis painting in its place, then pop The King's Greatest Hits CD into the drive. Voila - mood art. Replace the art/music to suit your guests. Highbrow girlfriend? How 'bout a nice Renaissance piece w/some Bach? Andy Warhol and ABBA? Picasso and Pink Floyd? The possibilities are endless, and so are the conversations you'll have about this interesting and entertaining art display. br br You could also paint the whole thing flat black, take out one of the speakers and put in its place a simple red light ala the HAL 9000. Record "Good Morning, Dave" as your startup sound and "Goodbye, Dave" as the shutdown. Hmm... "I can't do that, Dave" would be a great alert sound. br br Another possibility... flip the screen DVD drive upside down, then mount the sucker onto a lazy susan attached to the ceiling inside your Dodge Grand Caravan.
